“She said what?” I lean in and try to hear what Leo is saying to me over the noise of machinery around me.

“She said she will be here in a day,” he yells again, and I finally understand.

“Martha? She’s still coming?” I shake my head.

A few days ago, this would have been the best news I could have gotten, but today, my mind instantly jumps to Gemma. I find myself wondering what she’s doing or thinking about. Ever since we spent all of yesterday together, she has occupied my thoughts ninety percent of the time, and I have to make a conscious effort to stay focused on my tasks at hand.

“Yes, she’s feeling better, and she still plans to make the trip. Everything should arrive by then, and she’s going to oversee it.” Leo watches me as he says it, no doubt seeing the emotions play out over my face.

What am I going to tell Gemma?

“You have a contract with her, mate; you know she has to come. Might as well let her because you have to pay her.”

“Damn it. I know,” I say, running my forearm across my forehead to wipe the sweat off.

“I don’t think Gemma will be upset. She knew it was a possibility that things could change, right?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t think Martha would make it before the deadline. But since I never had Gemma sign anything, I guess we can’t be held liable.”

The statement makes me feel sick and a little shady. I know it was more a spoken business transaction, but I don’t know what to do. I wasn’t expecting to have Martha come after she left us hanging, and since she’s technically coming to do her job, there’s no breach of contract.

Shit.

I run a hand over my face again and look at Leo. “Yeah, I’ll have to let Gemma know what’s going on.”

“That would be your best course of action,” he agrees with a curt nod, and I sigh.

Wallpaper is supposed to start going up today, and Gemma is meeting me in an hour to talk to the team. I don’t know how she will react since I’ve taken up a lot of her vacation time to have her help me, and now, I’m essentially going to say, Thanks, but you aren’t needed anymore.

“Maybe this is a good way to break it off, mate.”

“Break it off? You are the one who pushed me into this in the first place,” I say, rage building in my chest. I know that I’m not pissed at Leo. I’m pissed at myself for not being more of a man and not being straight with myself. “Sorry.” I shake my head and place both fists on the worktable in front of me, bending over and hanging my head, stretching the tense muscles out.

“It’s cool. I did urge you to take some time off. But agreeing to work with her, that was all you.”
